World No. 1 Wang Xiyu has expressed her disappointment after injury forced the home favourite to withdraw from the 2018 ITF Junior Masters in Chengdu.
Wang Xiyu received treatment during the opening set of her surprise 64 62 defeat to Colombia’s Maria Camila Osorio Serrano on Centre Court on Thursday.
That injury was later confirmed as a rib problem, and after considerable deliberation the 17-year-old left-hander confirmed that she was unable to contest the remainder of the tournament.
“I am sad because I cannot continue playing,” said Wang Xiyu.
“I had been struggling with this injury previously but before the competition it was feeling better, but after the last few days and particularly today it felt worse.
“I took nearly four hours to decide whether I could continue playing. I wanted to give it as long as possible because I was very excited to play the ITF Junior Masters. This was the first time I played here.
“But it has happened now and I have to respect that I cannot continue.”
World No.2 Clara Burel, who was scheduled to play Wang Xiyu in her final group match, will not have a match on Friday as a result. World No. 5 Osorio Serrano will face Eleonora Molinaro in the one remaining Group Liang clash
